SEER Versus SEER2

SEER2 is an updated rating standard introduced by the DOE. The DOE designed the SEER2 standards to assess typical home operating conditions more accurately than the older SEER rating standards, which used precise protocols to determine ratings at ideal conditions. The SEER2 standards incorporate updated testing procedures, better indicating how a unit operates in real-world scenarios.

Like miles-per-gallon for a car, SEER2 and EER2 provide a simple method to compare the efficiencies of various products – the higher the rating, the more efficient the unit.

EER2 and SEER2

EER2 and SEER2 both evaluate an air conditioner’s energy efficiency, but they apply to two different types of temperature conditions:

• EER2 measures an air conditioner’s efficiency at the peak cooling temperature of 95°F.
• SEER2 measures an air conditioner’s efficiency throughout an entire cooling season, with temperatures ranging from 65°F to 104°F.
